C0398 GMC Description
The transfer case range actuator position sensor is also known as the incremental position sensor. The transfer case range actuator position sensor is an integral part of the Transfer Case Motor and cannot be replaced independently. The Transfer Case Motor is also known as the transfer case range actuator.
The Gear Position Sensor is also known as the transfer case range position sensor, the two/four-wheel drive actuator position sensor, or the rotational position sensor. The Gear Position Sensor is an absolute sensor and is an independently replaceable part.
Both sensors send transfer case range position information to the transfer case control module as voltage signals, which is then converted to degrees by the transfer case control module software. If the two sensors disagree by greater than a predetermined amount, the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will set.
The range actuator position sensor is more sensitive than the Gear Position Sensor but needs to reference the Gear Position Sensor value at ignition ON and range changes.
