Engine Oil Temperature Too High
Table of contents
P0298 JEEP Possible Causes
- Engine Oil
- Faulty Engine Oil Temperature Sensor
- Engine Oil Temperature Sensor harness is open or shorted
- Engine Oil Temperature Sensor circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
How do I fix code P0298 JEEP?
Check the “Possible Causes” listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector’s pins.
Tech Notes
- On engines that are equipped with an oil temperature sensor, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reads oil temperature to determine if it is excessive. When an oil temperature sensor is not present, the PCM uses an oil algorithm to infer the actual temperature. Engine shutdown strategy function is the same on vehicles with and without oil temperature sensors.
Cost of diagnosing the P0298 JEEP code
The cost of diagnosing the P0298 JEEP code is 1.0 hour of labor. The auto repair labor rates vary by location, your vehicle’s make and model, and even your engine type. Most auto repairs shops charge between $75 and $150 per hour.
Possible Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
P0298 JEEP Description
The Engine Oil Temperature (EOT) Sensor is a variable resistor that measures the temperature of the engine oil. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) supplies a 5-Volt reference and a ground to the sensors low reference signal circuit. When the oil temperature is low, the sensor resistance is high. When the oil temperature is high, the sensor resistance is low. The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0298 is set when the Engine oil temperature rises faster than a calibrated modeled temperature. When the actual oil temperature exceeds the high boundary of the calibrated modeled temperature for three minutes the fault is set. Two trip fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.
