P050A KIA Possible Causes
- Air Intake leaks
- Lack of intake air volume
- Faulty Fuel injection system
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Engine mechanical concern
- Damaged or sludged throttle body
How do I fix code P050A KIA?
Check the “Possible Causes” listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector’s pins.
Tech Notes
- There is a factory service bulletin for the following Kia models:
- 2012-2013 Kia Rio
- 2012-2013 Kia Soul
- The Factory Service Bulletin recommends reprogramming the Engine Control Module (ECM) to fix the problem.
Cost of diagnosing the P050A KIA code
The cost of diagnosing the P050A KIA code is 1.0 hour of labor. The auto repair labor rates vary by location, your vehicle’s make and model, and even your engine type. Most auto repairs shops charge between $75 and $150 per hour.
When is the code detected
The Engine Control Module (ECM) does not control engine idle speed properly when engine is started with pre-warming up condition.
Possible Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
P050A KIA Description
The Powertrain Control Module (ECM/PCM) along with the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) controls ignition timing and engine idle speed during cold engine start (cold soak). The ETCS controls the throttle motor to open and close the throttle valve to achieve the target idle speed. In addition, the ECM/PCM controls (retards) ignition timing and the ETCS increases the intake air amount to quickly increase the catalyst temperature at cold start to reduce emissions. If no DTCs are present, inspect the intake air system for air restrictions, vacuum leaks, and damage. If no concerns are present, clear any DTCs and verify the engine coolant temperature is below 37.8°C (100°F). Allow the vehicle to soak for 2-3 hours if necessary for the engine coolant temperature to fall below 37.8°C (100°F). Start the engine without touching the accelerator pedal and allow the engine to idle for 6 minutes in park. If no DTCs are present and the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is not illuminated after idling for 6 minutes.
