P0654 PONTIAC Possible Causes

  • Faulty Instrument Cluster
  • Instrument Cluster harness is open or shorted
  • Instrument Cluster circuit poor electrical connection
  • Faulty PCM

How do I fix code P0654 PONTIAC?

Check the “Possible Causes” listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector’s pins.

Cost of diagnosing the P0654 PONTIAC code

The cost of diagnosing the P0654 PONTIAC code is 1.0 hour of labor. The auto repair labor rates vary by location, your vehicle’s make and model, and even your engine type. Most auto repairs shops charge between $75 and $150 per hour.

When is the code detected

If the fault detection circuit senses a voltage other than what is expected, the fault line status changes causing the P0654 code will set.

Possible Symptoms

  • Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

P0654 PONTIAC Description

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) supplies a voltage to the Engine Speed Output circuit. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) creates the Engine Speed Output signal by rapidly grounding this circuit via an internal switch called a driver. The other components on this circuit recognize the voltage being pulled to ground as an indication of engine speed. The driver supplies the ground for the component being controlled. Each driver has a fault line which the PCM monitors. When the PCM commands a component ON, the voltage of the control circuit should be low (near 0 volts). When the PCM commands the control circuit to a component OFF, the voltage potential of the circuit should be high (near battery voltage).
